Transcend and Transcend Lineage sit at the top of the composite range, both backed by 50-year limited residential warranties and engineered with a protective shell technology that resists fading, staining, and scratching. Transcend Lineage adds heat-mitigating technology that keeps the board noticeably cooler underfoot on sunny days, worth considering for south-facing decks that get direct sun most of the afternoon. For the most photorealistic wood grain and the highest scratch resistance in the lineup, Trex Signature is the luxury option, also backed by a 50-year warranty.

Composite decking has to survive a Southern Minnesota winter, not just look good in a showroom. Every deck we build starts below grade, with footings poured to meet Minnesota’s Zone II frost protection standard, a minimum of 42 inches, so the structure underneath your composite boards stays stable through repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Composite decking itself resists the moisture damage, splitting, and rot that eventually catches up with pressure-treated lumber, but only if the substructure underneath is built correctly first.

Most projects fall into the same three categories we see across every service we offer. New construction gives us full control over layout, spacing, and hidden fastening from the start. A Deck Replacement/Repair project lets us swap failing wood decking for composite while reusing sound framing wherever it still meets code. Southern Minnesota’s frost line reaches deep, which is why the state’s building code classifies this region as Zone II for frost protection, requiring footings on any attached deck to extend at least 42 inches below grade. But this gave us an opportunity to have a deck built to the size that we wanted, rather than having one that is too small to be useful.
My husband researched various decking companies in the Twin Cities, with Decked Out Minnesota being one of them. After chatting with several companies, we invited Matt Berger, the owner of Decked Out Minnesota to come out to provide us with an estimate.
Matt was so thorough when meeting with us. He was here for over 2 hours walking us through all of the options and decisions we’d need to make if we went with his company, and not once did he try to up-sell us on anything.
Within a day we received his very fair estimate based on our internet research related to costs, and we signed the contract.  We were given a timeline of about 4 to 6 weeks until they could start, and they started on 7/27/26 and finished 7/30/26. His amazing crew of Kevin, Matt, and Jason were here working during the extremely hot 90+ degree weather that week.
Watching their process from inside the house it was easy for us to conclude they have a finely tuned operation and we were in great hands.
One of the positively surprising items was that Matt didn’t require us to pay an upfront deposit for the work to be done. Matt initially carried the cost of all of the materials and the permit, and then 1/2 of the cost was due the day they started and the remainder due once Matt does a final walkthrough of the deck ensuring it meets his standards too, and the city inspector too.
The 12 x 16 feet deck is off the 2nd floor, and we opted for no stairs to take full use of the square footage while keeping the costs low, as Matt said stairs could add close to $10k to the build. We also had it built with TREX. We highly recommend Decked Out Minnesota without reservations to anyone looking to have a quality deck built. Matt and his team are amazing.

How long does composite decking last?

Trex composite decking carries a 25, 35, or 50-year limited residential warranty depending on the collection. Following proper installation guidelines matters just as much as the material itself, since improper fastening or spacing can void that coverage.

Is composite decking hot in the summer?

Like any outdoor surface, composite decking can get warm in direct sun, especially in darker colors. Trex’s Transcend Lineage collection uses heat-mitigating technology to stay noticeably cooler, and lighter colors help across every collection.

Can you install composite decking on an existing frame?

Sometimes, but only if the existing framing and footings meet current Minnesota code, including the 42-inch Zone II frost footing depth. We evaluate the substructure first, since composite decking is only as good as what it’s fastened to.

Is composite decking slippery when wet?

Composite decking has moderate traction but, like most outdoor surfaces, can become slick in rain, ice, or snow. We recommend rock salt or calcium chloride for ice and a routine soap-and-water cleaning when the seasons change.
