Why We Recommend Westbury’s Tuscany Aluminum System

Every deck railing Southern Minnesota homeowner asks us to recommend, we point toward the same product: Westbury’s Tuscany aluminum railing. After installing it across dozens of projects, the reasons are simple. It’s available in twelve standard colors, an industry-leading range, with custom colors available by special order, and every finish comes in smooth or textured thanks to a proprietary 10-step powder coating process that holds up to weather most other finishes can’t match.

Unlike steel, Tuscany won’t rust and is far lighter to handle and install. Unlike wood, it never warps, buckles, or needs painting or staining, season after season. It’s more durable and easier to maintain than vinyl, and it goes up faster and more affordably than most composite systems, without sacrificing the clean, sophisticated look homeowners want.

The classic two-rail design with square aluminum balusters works across both traditional and contemporary home styles, so it doesn’t lock you into one aesthetic. When a project calls for it, a variety of handrail options keep the system ADA compliant, which matters for homeowners planning ahead for accessibility.

Tuscany is backed by a lifetime limited warranty, and it was recognized as the top-quality product in its category in Builder Magazine’s 2022 Brand Study. That combination, good looks, low maintenance, and dependable strength, is why it’s become our default recommendation rather than just one option among many.

Choosing a finish usually comes down to matching existing trim, gutters, or window frames, and having twelve standard colors plus custom options means we can usually get an exact match without a special order delay eating into your project timeline.

How Tuscany Compares to Other Railing Materials

We still install wood, cable, and composite railing when a project calls for it, but Tuscany is what we reach for by default, and the comparison is usually straightforward once homeowners see it in person. Wood requires regular staining or sealing to survive Minnesota’s freeze-thaw cycles, and even well-maintained wood railing eventually needs boards replaced as they weather. Steel railing is strong, but it’s heavy to install and vulnerable to rust once the powder coating gets scratched or chipped, which happens more easily during a Minnesota winter of ice scraping and road salt.

Vinyl railing is low-maintenance on paper, but it tends to become brittle in extreme cold and can crack under impact in a way aluminum doesn’t. Composite railing systems look good and pair naturally with composite decking, but they typically cost more and take longer to install than an aluminum system like Tuscany.

Tuscany’s aluminum construction sidesteps most of these tradeoffs. It holds its color and finish for years without fading or chalking, resists the dents and dings that come with Minnesota winters, and installs quickly enough that it rarely becomes the bottleneck on a project timeline. For most homeowners comparing options, it ends up being the material that requires the least thought after installation, which is exactly the point.

For homeowners weighing cost against long-term value, it helps to think in total years of ownership rather than sticker price alone. A railing you never have to repaint, refinish, or replace panels on ends up being the cheaper option once you count out a decade or two of upkeep.

Where Tuscany Fits: New Builds, Rebuilds, and Upgrades

Tuscany works well across the same three project types as any railing system we install. On new deck construction, we design post spacing and corner details around the Tuscany panel system from the start, so the finished railing looks intentional rather than pieced together.

When a deck is going through a full Deck Replacement/Repair project, it’s often the easiest time to switch to Tuscany, since the old railing is coming out regardless and the lighter aluminum panels install faster than most of what they’re replacing. Homeowners rebuilding an aging wood deck frequently use the opportunity to move to a system they won’t need to repaint every few summers.

The third scenario, replacing railing on a deck that’s staying put, is where Tuscany’s lighter weight and panelized design help the most. We can often swap out an old wood or steel railing for Tuscany without extensive rework to the deck itself, as long as the post layout meets current code.

Because Tuscany carries a lifetime limited warranty, homeowners get long-term protection that most wood or steel systems simply can’t match, which matters when you’re planning to stay in a home for years rather than flipping it after one season.

Whatever the starting point, every Tuscany installation meets Minnesota’s height and spacing code, whether the project is in Faribault, Northfield, or one of the South Metro communities we serve, including Savage, Burnsville, and Rosemount. And if a homeowner specifically wants wood, cable, or composite instead, we’re glad to build that too.

We also coordinate railing with lighting and stair upgrades when projects overlap, so fasteners, finishes, and wiring work together as one system instead of several unrelated add-ons handled separately over time.

Railing Built for Minnesota Code and Minnesota Weather

Minnesota’s winters are hard on railing finishes: road salt, ice scraping, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles chip and fade lesser coatings within a few seasons. Westbury’s Tuscany system holds up because of how it’s finished, not just what it’s made of. A proprietary 10-step powder coating process bonds color and texture to the aluminum in a way that resists chipping, fading, and corrosion far longer than a standard spray finish, on top of a lifetime limited warranty that backs the whole system, and it still meets Minnesota’s minimum guardrail height and baluster spacing requirements on every project.

We purchased a new build in Lakeville, and unfortunately the builder did not install a deck with the home. But this gave us an opportunity to have a deck built to the size that we wanted, rather than having one that is too small to be useful. My husband researched various decking companies in the Twin Cities, with Decked Out Minnesota being one of them. After chatting with several companies, we invited Matt Berger, the owner of Decked Out Minnesota to come out to provide us with an estimate. Matt was so thorough when meeting with us. He was here for over 2 hours walking us through all of the options and decisions we’d need to make if we went with his company, and not once did he try to up-sell us on anything. Within a day we received his very fair estimate based on our internet research related to costs, and we signed the contract. We were given a timeline of about 4 to 6 weeks until they could start, and they started on 7/27/26 and finished 7/30/26. His amazing crew of Kevin, Matt, and Jason were here working during the extremely hot 90+ degree weather that week. Watching their process from inside the house it was easy for us to conclude they have a finely tuned operation and we were in great hands. One of the positively surprising items was that Matt didn’t require us to pay an upfront deposit for the work to be done. Matt initially carried the cost of all of the materials and the permit, and then 1/2 of the cost was due the day they started and the remainder due once Matt does a final walkthrough of the deck ensuring it meets his standards too, and the city inspector too. The 12 x 16 feet deck is off the 2nd floor, and we opted for no stairs to take full use of the square footage while keeping the costs low, as Matt said stairs could add close to $10k to the build. We also had it built with TREX. We highly recommend Decked Out Minnesota without reservations to anyone looking to have a quality deck built. Matt and his team are amazing.

Very happy with every aspect of this company. The estimate was ready very quickly and Matt helped us with picking colors and which Trex decking line that would work best for our project. We used the black aluminum railing that is beautiful and very sturdy. The time estimate to get the project finished was spot on and the guys kept everything clean and neat during and after the project. Great experience having Matt and his team do our deck.

Matt was easy to work with when designing our deck. He showed us examples of his work so we could see products first hand that we liked and others we didn’t care for. The deck was built in a timely manner with a respectful, hardworking crew. They were flexible with changes that needed to be made in the process as well. The communication was excellent throughout the whole process. Thank you, Matt!

Matt responded very quickly to my request for information and an estimate. We needed our old wooden deck removed and wanted a new deck built using Trex. He and his crew were wonderful to work with. He took our original ideas and made great suggestions so that when he drew up the plan it was the most cost effective and provided a great use of backyard space. He and his crew were very professional and precise about all the work involved in building a top quality deck. We are so happy with how it all turned out and would highly recommend Decked Out MN if you are in need of a new deck. They do a fantastic job.
